![]() Ankit used this guide to get CrashPlan running on his PogoPlug, then dug in a lot more than I did to solve the problems I described. Update: All sections marked Update: that apply to Java and udev were courtesy of Ankit Mohan. None of the credit goes to me, I’m just collecting the wisdom of others in one place, hopefully an easy one to find. Since it took me way longer to find the various pieces, let alone get them to work, than I felt it should have, I’m writing this (for myself, as well as for others who might give up more easily than I did). Since I was able to do this, successfully, the instructions can be found on the Net. Since we are often at other, very high-speed locations, I still believe that paying for the CrashPlan online backup service is the way to go (and gives me great comfort), but when I’m home, I wanted a local solution (that didn’t involve plugging in a hard drive to my laptop). In other words, not really a useful real-time backup solution. My primary reason for installing CrashPlan on this device is to compensate for the pathetic upload speed provided by Time Warner, all of 485Kbps, shared with my wife, for normal Internet use, VoIP calls and backups. You will be voiding your PogoPlug warranty and CrashPlan does not support this configuration of their Linux software. I wanted it to be my primary DLNA server.Ĭaution: none of what follows is supported by either company. To be slightly more accurate, I wanted the device to perform an additional function (beyond backups). To solve a number of my own problems (not caused by either service!), I decided to investigate marrying them (the PogoPlug device, with the CrashPlan software). I’ve had both for a while and think very highly of them. CrashPlan is an amazing piece of software (and also provides a fee-based amazing service). PogoPlug Pro is an amazing device (coupled with an amazing service). I will strike-through the parts that were replaced, so that you can safely ignore them if you’re going through this guide for the first time. Updates will be marked with End Update to allow for multi-paragraph updates. You can apply those instructions separately if you’ve already completed the rest of this installation. I don't want to have to babysit my backup software that I pay a monthly fee. There are critical updates embedded in this post, added on, all preceded with Update. So far I have "fixed" it back to a working state 3 times due to updates, and this latest one is just the last straw. It is a shame, since CrashPlans prices are very reasonable, but with their lack of support and failure to keep things functioning the same way I am done with them. I think I am going to go back to a more manual rsync over to an external site. Well I have done that more times than I can count. Like you, support was utterly useless, with their only suggestion, "Uninstall and reinstall". I have spent this weekend trying to get it to work again, but it seems like it is a lost cause. Seems like any time I get it working, another update is pushed out and they change the port or some other nonsense. Ever since I have been fighting it (over 4 months now). Only to have it run for about a week with incrementals when an update is pushed out and breaks my configuration. Fast forward about 6 months later, I finish my initial sync. Finally got it running, and began the backup process. It took me quite some time to get it running in a headless configuration. I've been pleased with CrashPlan thus far but if I can't connect it's useless to me and I'll soon have to find an alternative.Īnyone have a similar problem or any advice? At this point I'm losing faith that I'll ever get connected again. ![]() It generally takes about three days for anyone at Code 42 to respond to my emails and I've called and they tell me I have to get support via email. The tray icon seems to run fine, but as soon as I tell it to show the application the CrashPlan application box that pops up stops responding immediately after it starts. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium with 12 GB of memory, my backup is around 300 GB. I've removed my cache, uninstalled and reinstalled the program, gone into services.msc and stopped and restarted the program, told it to delay the startup, I've disabled all antivirus and firewall services. ![]() I've spoke with support for about three weeks and we've gotten nowhere. It's been a month since my CrashPlan was able to connect and back up anything. ![]()
