Rates of chemoautotrophy and methanotrophy were sufficient to support heterotrophic demand in the water column and agreed well with the inferred physiologies of dominant taxa identified, yet observed doubling times of ~200 days confirmed slow metabolisms with low growth efficiencies (8%). When SLW was accessed for study in 2013, its water column was under-saturated in oxygen ( ∼16% of air-saturated water), had relatively high dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations (~221 μmol L −1), and contained a diverse and metabolically active community of bacteria and archaea. 1) is a component of that system beneath an 800 m thick portion of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) and was the first Antarctic subglacial lake directly sampled. Comparison of communities to those in lake sediments under an adjacent ice stream (Whillans Subglacial Lake) and near its grounding zone provide seminal evidence for a subglacial metacommunity that is biogeochemically and evolutionarily linked through ice sheet dynamics and the transport of microbes, water, and sediments beneath WAIS.ĭynamic subglacial water systems beneath the Antarctic ice sheet are modulated by hydrologically connected subglacial lakes that episodically fill and drain, transferring water and material between basins before eventually discharging to the ocean. δ¹☼ values for EPS (−25 to −30‰) are consistent with the primary source of carbon for biosynthesis originating from legacy marine organic matter. Concentrations of dissolved methane and total organic carbon together with water content in the sediments are the strongest predictors of taxon and community composition. The most abundant taxa are related to chemolithoautotrophs capable of oxidizing reduced nitrogen, sulfur, and iron compounds with oxygen, nitrate, or iron. Bacterial and archaeal communities in the surficial sediments are more abundant and diverse, with significantly different compositions from those found deeper in the sediment column. We examined microbial abundances, used 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to assess community structures, and characterized extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) associated with distinct lithologic units in the sediments. A 2.06 m composite sediment profile was recently recovered from Mercer Subglacial Lake, a 15 m deep water cavity beneath a 1087 m thick portion of the Mercer Ice Stream. Ice streams that flow into Ross Ice Shelf are underlain by water-saturated sediments, a dynamic hydrological system, and subglacial lakes that intermittently discharge water downstream across grounding zones of West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS). If you are trying to watch your dog’s weight, then this might not be a good meal choice for them. There aren’t usually very many seeds on a sesame seed bun, so these are perfectly safe for your dog to eat. Since a dog’s body can’t digest seeds, they might give them gas or make them have to poop more frequently. These types of bread tend to have lots of seeds and grains in them. You see, even if they can, doesn’t mean they should. But dogs still shouldn’t eat them, there just isn’t any benefit to it. The ASPCA says they are non-toxic to dogs. There are lots of different ways to eat sesame, so let’s look at each one individually. It’s also a good source of B vitamins for energy and iron for healthy blood functions. The next step is to minimize the recurrence of overlapping – again. Like cars going down the right side of the road without having to talk about it. The smaller fleets go down, and the larger fleets go up, just due to the nature of the logic. This results in 1) larger fleets generally going to a higher orbit, where there is more room, and 2) cooperative behavior without explicit communication between fleets. If the neighbor is smaller, the fleet moves to a higher orbit if smaller, to a lower one. So, in addition, each fleet looks at its nearest overlapping neighbor. Of course, at some point there could be too many fleets regardless of anything we might do, but still, it’s possible to do better. Using just the above was almost good enough, but fell short when there were too many fleets for an orbit to hold, leading to endless jostling. While that produced quicker separation, it also felt too hectic – we generally want stately orbiting, not chaos. The important part is that the actions of the fleets will not conflict with each other.Īn initial version of the algorithm made fleets in the back of the pack move backwards, as well. The fleet then figures out the average location of these neighbors, and moves forward more quickly along its orbit, but only if the average location is behind it. The effect is that fleets that are already at the front of a pack will pull forward, while other fleets will continue along their slower-paced orbits. That’s easy enough – just a distance check with some padding. The first order of business is for a fleet to get a list of neighbors that are too close for comfort. The calculations are also performed by each fleet independently, but designed so that effectively cooperative behavior emerges when all the fleets apply the same behavioral rules. So, what’s actually involved in getting this behavior? While nothing here is terribly complex, there is a surprising number of pieces. The other day, encountering a particularly egregious case, I wrote a quick algorithm for the fleet AI to use to avoid overlapping other orbiting fleets as much as possible. This isn’t a huge problem in terms of game mechanics, but it’s still occasionally inconvenient and just messy to look at. The orbits of some well-to-do colonies can get quite crowded, with fleets overlapping each other and being difficult to pick out. In Starsector, fleets will often orbit a planet for some time – trade fleets offloading cargo, patrols preparing for duty, and so on. I will, of course, continue to write regular-style blog posts as well. This blog post is a bit different than usual – instead of talking about a major new game mechanic, I’d like to instead take a quick – but in-depth – look at something relatively minor, but that I thought was interesting. Once you’re logged into Beatport in Rekordbox DJ, you can then play these songs even without an internet connection. Offline Locker You can store up to 100 songs in your Offline Locker (50 songs if you’re on the Beatport Pro plan). It does take a few seconds longer for the waveform to be drawn and for the deck to be populated depending on your connection, but when it loads the track can be played as normal (even if the WiFi conks out). Once you’ve found a song, you can drag and drop it to any of the decks just like it were part of your normal music library. That said, you’re still able to do a search of the entire catalogue, and you can browse through different genres – it’s just a bit harder to do so compared to doing it on the Beatport site. You can also access the Beatport catalogue from your Rekordbox DJ / WeDJ Collection browser: it’s not as graphical or intuitive as using the Beatport site though, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to add songs to playlists if you go this route. It would be a lot faster and easier if you could add a song to a playlist just by clicking on a dropdown beside the track, as in the case of purchasing a song and then adding it to a crate. That means you need to copy/paste the artist name and title every single time you want to add a track to a playlist, which is a bit of a drag. You need to do it from within the playlist itself which you will want to have in a separate tab or window. The playlisting aspect is still a bit clunky: there’s no way for you to add a song to a playlist while browsing Beatport. You can have as many playlists as you like in your account, and these playlists show up in Rekordbox DJ / WeDJ once you log in. With Beatport and an internet connection, you’re able to access the catalogue and create playlists through your internet browser, letting you add tracks. There are over six million songs in Beatport’s catalogue (it’s the largest dance music specialist store after all). Currently, there’s no way for you to create Beatport playlists or add songs to Beatport playlists inside of Rekordbox DJ. In Use Playlisting You can create playlists over on the Beatport site, which you can then access within the Beatport \folder in Rekordbox DJ. We signed up for the Beatport Pro plan, installed the Rekordbox beta, and got to work. Offline Locker lets you “download” songs which get saved in your DJ software so you don’t have to be connected to the internet when you spin with them (more on that later).Ĭheck out our guide to the Best DJ Music Streaming Servicesįinally, the top-tier Beatport Pro (US$59.99/month) gets you all the features of the previous plans, but with storage for up to 100 songs in the Offline Locker.īeatport, and the Rekordbox version (5.6.1) that supports it, are currently in beta. Beatport Pro (US$39.99/month) comes with all that, plus an Offline Locker with storage for up to 50 songs. There are three subscription tiers: the basic Beatport plan (US$14.99/month) comes with streaming and the ability to make playlists on Beatport. Only the Beatport Pro and Beatport Pro accounts offer the Offline Locker feature that lets you “save” songs and play them without an internet connection. There are three pricing tiers for Beatport’s streaming service. It’s worth noting that Beatport can only be accessed in Rekordbox DJ aka “Performance Mode” – it won’t work in “Export Mode”, which means you can’t export music from Beatport to a thumb drive for use with media players like CDJs / XDJs. You can then access these playlists (and search the catalogue) while spinning when you login to Beatport inside your DJ app. Once subscribed, you’re able to create playlists on the Beatport site and add songs to them. You subscribe to it via the Beatport site. Currently it works with Pioneer DJ’s Rekordbox DJ and WeDJ apps, with Virtual DJ integration coming later this year. Beatport has a subscription service that lets you access and stream from the entire Beatport catalogue straight to your DJ software.
When the player does not get the features in the wax paper, the computer tells them the move is not allowed. The player makes about 5 or 6 cakes in one of the difficulty levels. At higher levels the specifications become more complex and multiple cakes must be manufactured in parallel on a single conveyor belt. The final score depends upon the number of cakes baked, the number of incorrect orders sent and the efficiency of the player in baking. After a certain number of correct orders are shipped in the box, the player wins the game, and the score is tabulated. If the player sends two or three incorrect orders, the game is over. If the cake does not match the specification on the TV, the player is penalized, and the cake gets thrown in the trash. Elements of the cake include cake pan shapes (square, circular or heart-shaped), flavor of batter (strawberry, chocolate or vanilla), 3 cake layerings (red, green or white), optional icing (strawberry, chocolate or vanilla), and other decorations (for instance, sugar may be sprinkled on top of the cake, and in rarer cases, flames are applied to iced cakes to create a smooth glaze). I remember Purble Place from one of my old computers, but when I traded in that old computer for a shiny new Windows 10 one I traded in that wacky selection of minigames with it. The object is to fill orders in a bakery by assembling a cake to match a given cake specification on the TV, by controlling a conveyor belt that brings the cake to various stations. During that period our view of Manichaeism and subsequently on the Manichaean bishop, has changed. In the last hundred years Faustus and his work have received some significant scholarly attention. This work has been preserved, because Augustine cited it in its entirety in his Contra Faustum Manichaeum. That same Faustus published a work, the Capitula in which he discussed some exegetical controversies. Somehow Augustine became disappointed with the intellectual explanations Faustus provided for some of Manichaeism’s fabulous doctrines and thereby with Manichaeism as a religion. more According to Augustine’s own Confessiones, the Manichaean bishop Faustus of Milevis played a significant role in his apostasy from Manichaeism. The EVE-materials could help teachers in secondary education to study values together with their students. Recently, value education, especially in the context of citizenship education, has received more attention in the Dutch curriculum as a whole and the RE-curriculum in particular. However, no RE-teachers were involved in the EVE-project. The EVE-project envisioned the materials to be also used by teachers of religious education (RE), since the materials discuss topics that are traditionally addressed in RE-classes. They were developed in such a manner that would allow teachers to apply them directly in their own classes. These materials were made available for free online. The European Value Education (EVE)-project therefore developed educational materials that would help secondary teachers to discuss these values in schools. more European students and teachers both seem to lack a precise knowledge of European Values. The second revolves around the question what constitutes a workable 'framework of knowledge' in religious education, a framework that I try to base more on lived religion than on classical theological foundations.Įuropean students and teachers both seem to lack a precise knowledge of European Values. The first concerns the way in which students construct narratives of continuity in change in history and how to improve them. And through this approach we might easier engage in dialogue.Currently I am working on two didactical subjects. In stead of debating who is right, we come to understand that in most cases our not-knowing allows us te have an open mind to other constructs. Understanding the unavoidable constructive nature of all our knowledge, might open us up to other constructions. 'what truly happend in the past' and ''what other religious really believe') and more as a inquisitive approach of constructing and communicating meaning. For me the school subjects of 'history' and 'religious education' should therefore be less understood as communication of the true 'facts' (i.e. In my work I approach both as a mode of hermeneutic understanding. As a lecturer, my main field of expertise is what one might call historical and religious reasoning. For me, as a zen buddhist and as an historian and religious sholar, serving others is both to engage them in 'not-knowing' or to train our 'beginners-mind' and to develop a trust that every moment possesses enough to live a fulfilled life. Additional information regarding when apparel with these new marks will be available will be communicated in the near future. As Roshi Bernie Glassman once stated, serving others is a valuable way of zen practice. The new font, which includes alphabetical and numerical options, will be gradually adopted over the course of the 2018-19 athletic year. Research done for the brand positioning more clearly identified the traits of a Wolfpack to be incorporated into future uniform and branding campaigns, such as wolves' ferocity in attacking with their fangs, an element factored into the font design. It provides a modern take with noticeable touches such as fangs within the lettering and numbers. The Wolfpack Font will be exclusive to NC State Athletics and is inspired by the University family of fonts used by NC State University. The Wolfpack Font was used to create new "NC State" and "Wolfpack" word marks. The brand position included the development of a new proprietary and customized font, the "Wolfpack Font" which will be used on team uniforms, within NC State Athletics facilities, and on the majority of marketing and branding collateral. "I appreciate the good work done by our creative team and adidas to develop a unique font and word marks for use by NC State Athletics on uniforms and in key branding and strategic communications areas," said NC State Director of Athletics Debbie Yow. With those concepts in mind, NC State Athletics announces additions to its official Athletics marks, the result of a collaborative and comprehensive brand position process with apparel partner adidas. The poor pacing becomes immediately apparent with the overall snail’s pace of the ship and drones (aerial drones don’t suffer from this issue) and absurd distances between islands. The campaign gives the player the objective to take over as many of the 64 islands as possible and destroy the enemy AI-controlled carrier. Single-player has two main modes, campaign and custom skirmish, with only the latter allowing for player customization of the game’s scenario parameters. The biggest problems of single-player are the game’s terrible pace due to a lack of modern sensibilities, frustratingly tedious controls, and confusing information presentation (the latter issues also translate to multiplayer to a smaller extent). Yet such a focus on multiplayer and clear lack of attention and refinement to single-player raises serious questions about its inclusion and brings the entire experience down. The developers make it very clear that the game is pretty much meant to be solely played cooperatively and in competitive multiplayer. However, the main issues arise from the implementation of Carrier Command’s modes, particularly single-player, drone controls, and the frustrating obtuseness of some of its systems. The simplicity of the premise is also appreciated as it sets the stage and doesn’t get in the way of the action with heavy exposition. Moreover, the potential for light role-playing is also present, given the immersive UI, especially in multiplayer. There really is no other game out there like this.įrom a mechanics standpoint, there is also plenty of content on offer, such as the procedurally-generated map alongside the excellent variety and depth to drone command and customization. Conceptually, the game is incredible, ambitious, and innovative with its focus on team-based strategic decision-making and coordinated tactical action, as well as the inclusion of a logistics system and supply lines. From an audio design standpoint, Carrier Command 2 fares better with impactful weapon effects, satisfying hum of jet engines and whirring propeller blades, and decent, albeit repetitive, setting-appropriate music.Ĭarrier Command 2 is the most perplexing and lop-sided game I’ve ever reviewed. Graphically, the game uses a voxel approach to evoke the old minimalist pixel art style of the original games, which certainly gives this updated vision of Carrier Command a smoother visual style, but it’s not breathtaking by any means and has plenty of jank, especially when it comes to water. However, as far as wider presentation goes, Carrier Command 2 is a mixed bag. The benefit of this approach is a greater sense of immersion compared to games with more abstract and functional UI, making this feel novel and fresh. The game barely has a narrative, though this neither adds or detracts from the experience, only serving to set the stage for this abstracted sci-fi setting.Ĭarrier Command 2 also continues MicroProse’s unique brand of introducing a new strategy sub-genre to the market: the diegetic strategy game where players must interact with the physical in-game UI elements designed to simulate the bridge. In Carrier Command 2, players act as a crew member on a sci-fi assault carrier plotting out courses, launching drones, setting up supply lines, capturing islands, and ultimately facing off against another carrier. Can Geometa’s Carrier Command 2 bring back good memories of the original, uphold MicroProse’s promising return, and begin a revolution? Highfleet was a solid return to form for the dormant publisher and showed exactly the required potential for creative game design in the current franchise and license-dominated strategy market. On top of that, get into each and every vehicle and take part in the action!Ĭarrier Command is an '80s strategy classic well known for its unique blend of strategy and vehicle simulation.Since its revival in 2019, MicroProse has been back with a vengeance by lining up a slew of innovative and funky strategy and simulation-lite games. Make the most of different unit types synergies and create combined arms assaults to efficiently win battles. Ensuring these supply lines remain open will be key to your survival. Once you have taken an island you will need to exploit and defend the resources it provides. The approach you take to a situation will play a big part in the outcome. Gather intel from your vehicles' radars, pick your tools of the trade, and launch your attacks where the enemy presence is thinner. Get in the shoes of an admiral and lead from the front. Take command of a carrier and operate its systems to launch your offensive and conquer the Archipelago. True to MicroProse's heritage, Carrier Command 2 is all about meaningful decisions. Carrier Command 2 is Strategy, Planning and Teamwork on a scale that is both engaging and manageable. That’s when Josie Bates steps-up at the bequest of the teenagers mother the chief justice of the Californian Supreme Court and her old former room-mate. With life getting in the way again, though, it appears this isn’t to be, as she gets more than she originally bargained for.įacing an arrest as an adult, sixteen year old Hannah Sheraton has been convicted for the murder of her step-grandfather. Her practice in Hermosa Beach exemplifies that, and it is here that she hopes to settle down in and make a new start. The character of Josie Bates herself is a somewhat sympathetic one, as she hoped to initially get away from her life as a hot-shot defence attorney for something more simpler. That’s not to say that it isn’t universal, as it’s open to anyone, with many of its themes ringing true worldwide. This is somewhere that Forster clearly understands, managing to bring out a real sense of what the story is about through it. Set in California, this really manages to bring out the darker side to the state, juxtaposing a lot of the action against its location. Looking at politics too, it examines how they can become a real problematic obstacle in the pursuit of truth and justice. Whilst many of the more traditional tropes of the genre lie across the surface, it examines concepts of youth and growing up. This isn’t just a murder mystery novel, as a lot of other themes and ideas come through, with Forster making it into something else. Creating the style and the tone too, it really manages to evoke a sense of atmosphere and ambiance as well. It also introduced the character of Josie Bates to the mass reading public as well, building her character and backstory in the process. Initially brought out on the 3rd of February back in 2004, this was the book that established the Witness series overall. Maintaining its pace throughout, it manages to draw the reader in keeping them there, something which will carry on for some time to come as its popularity continues to grow. The character of Josie Bates herself is a strong one, something which Forster really brings out in her arc as the series progresses. Running for over seven books so far and counting, this series has a lot of potential to continue indefinitely. Shrewd and quick witted, she is always thinking on her feet, as she runs her own practice ensuring that justice always prevails. Following the exploits of the eponymous protagonist, it charts each case file of the defence attorney Josie Bates. One series that she is particularly well known for is that of her long-running series of The Witness, or her Josie Bates franchise as many have come to know it. With readers worldwide, she has been building her audience for quite some time as well, with more and more finding her work everyday. Getting inside the minds of her characters, she has really been able to offer an engaging series of novels. Want to get the biggest stories from PEOPLE every weekday?
